Great entertainment this year, and the best judges yet.

Jennifer Lopez is in a category all by herself. Her clothes are stunning, hair very creatively arranged in such diverse styles. And her makeup is fabulous. She loves to wear long fringy Shu Uemura lashes, and lashes made of mink hairs. Ever notice she emphasises either her eyes or lips, never both at the same time? Loves the gloss.. And personally, I have started to apply MAC Strobe cream on my cheeks before I apply cheek stain - that's how to achieve that natural shimmer or brightness on the apples of the cheeks, without using glitter powder.

A Makeup Lesson with dramatic changes

Working with women and teaching makeup skills is very rewarding. You have maybe been in a rut with your daily makeup routine, or have decided that now is the time to start wearing makeup daily. But not an overwhelming application - just something to liven things up, and maybe present a more polished version of your self.
I recently worked with a great woman, Virginia, who wanted to brush up on her techniques and know what kinds of products to invest in. She emailed me as soon as she got home;

" Thanks so much for my lesson today. I feel like a new woman! I went and bought some of the makeup you suggested. I also bought the face primer. Sephora was out of the Bare Minerals, but they are expecting a shipment on Wednesday, so I’ll pick that up then. I’ve had rave reviews from co-workers and friends on the makeup. "Our trip was amazing!
We loved the resort. The staff we so hard working and generous. The hotel was beautiful and the food was delicious!!! The transfers from the airport to the resort were great. American Express met us right away and whisked us away to our van.
We really enjoyed our time by the pool and the beach was very nice. The sand was so fine and the water was so warm, much warmer than in Maui. There was a lot of sea grass that washed up on shore, but nothing that would prevent us from swimming.All in all we were very impressed with the resort. We weren't disappointed in anything.
The resort is nice and small which I think will be perfect for the wedding in December.
Braden and I would like to thank both you and Liz for giving us this opportunity to go on this trip. It really has allowed us to relax a little when it comes to wedding planning. The resort is so beautiful that I don't need to over do it with planning.

Now Bride's know the importance of having a complete trial run to "test drive' their wedding day look. When I get together with a bride before the wedding, we try makeup applications, colors, and 2 or 3 hairstyles. I encourage brides to book this in conjunction with engagement photos. If they do, I will change the bridal look to keep it a secret

I had the pleasure of working with Vianne and Ben a few weeks ago. We established Vianne's bridal look, documented with images, then changed it for her engagement photo session with Michael Wachniak. Amazing shots!

Congrats to the happy couple Heather and Braden and little Ethan! Heather and Braden were at the Wedding show at the Bayshore in January. They entered their names, kept their fingers crossed and it worked! They are on their way to a relaxing holiday to Dreams Riviera Cancun in Mexico, including airfare and transfers. With this cool weather in Vancouver now, time in the sun, a cool dip in the pool, and a sip of cold beer sounds about right!

Olympians- Welcome to Vancouver!

What an exciting time to be in Vancouver. The 2010 winter Olympics have changed the city landscape, as well as the feelings of the locals.
I was in the down town core on Sunday, February 7th, and I admit, got got up in the fan fare.
I could truly feel the electricity, and loved to see all the kids skating on the rink on Robson, and hearing all the different dialects of the people around me.
The day was so beautiful, I wonder if all our visitors love the mountains, English Bay, Granville Island like I do. I intend to go back downtown over the next 2 weeks to take in some of the festivites.

Makeup and Hair in the Caribbean

You have decided to have a Destination Wedding in the Caribbean. What to do with your makeup and hair? I can assure you, it will be windy. Now it's a warm gentle breeze, but it still can create havoc with your hair.

So be easy on your self, and devise a game plan.

Go to MAC and try all the waterproof makeup like paint eyeshadow, primer, waterproof mascara, and powerpoint eye pencils. These products are not only a good investment for your wedding, but great for everyday use.

As for hair, wear it up or off your face. You can pull it all back into a ponytail, slick the top and sides back with TIGI Bed Head wax, (looks like deodorant) and pin some fresh orchids in the back. Now you don't have to worry about limp curls, or strands bowing across your face in photos.

The weather in the Caribbean is positively great, but heat and humidity can cause you to melt, so take the easy route and be prepared!

As a travel agent, specializing in destination weddings and honeymoons, I am always on the look out for great destinations. From Vancouver, most brides think of Mexico and the Caribbean. Most of us are aware that adding a bit of makeup can somewhat change our looks - longer lashes, fuller lips, great skin etc. And when it comes time for weddings, brides are very aware of makeup creating the flawless bridal look. This bride is a great example of just how far you can go to enhancing your features. She is a beautiful woman without one bit of makeup applied. But for her wedding, she wanted to look her ultimate best. "Dazzling" is a word to best describe her wedding day glow.

Lucky Me!

Being a professional makeup artist is exciting work. I have the opportunity to work with many interesting women, and creates some wonderful looks.

One of the perks of my job is to work with other professional makeup artists. In April I was invited to spend time with 2 of the busiest, most creative, famous makeup artists in the business. Gregory Arlt and Marie Delprete. Gregory is from LA, and has creative juices oozing from every pore. He has been profiled on Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, works all the big shows in Paris and Milan, designs looks for Alexander McQween, and works routinely with Alicia Keys, Brittany Murphy, Gwen Stefani and Kim Catrell to name but a few. Marie is from New York. She won an Emmy as the head makeup artist for the Gilmore Girls, has worked on the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and creates looks for with Angelina Jolie, Melanie Griffin, Jude Law, Lucy Liu to name a few.

They both shared some great stories, and all there current tips, and techniques.

Some of their tips: experiment with looks, don't be afraid to drop old habits and try something new, and less is often better. So don't over apply eye colors and lips - pick one to profile. And with brides - makeup should be fresh, natural looking. And one great tip - trust your professional makeup artist - the common goal of women everywhere, even Angelina, is to look like the "A-Plus Version of Yourself!"

It was a fabulous evening and I certainly will be happy to share all these techniques with you.

It will be my job to enhance your features, bring out your very best, all the while maintaining your true self. As you hair stylist, it is my job to create a hairstyle that is long wearing, feels comfortable for 12 hours, compliments your face, personality, time of day, and and gown. Is all this doable? You bet, BUT you and I have to work hand in hand. I am not creating a Susan look, but your look. I like to ask every question I can think of that will allow me to understand your true bridal vision.
But, I do need your help! When you are planning this whole look, you have many things to consider. Are you currently on a skin care program? Is your skin in the best possible shape you can achieve? This takes work for most of us. If your skin is oily, and you complain about it regularly, notice your makeup wears off quickly, are prone to large pores or breakouts, just know that no makeup I have will change that!
You have to start thinking about skin care before you come to me. The makeup I use is all top notch, but it can only enhance your look. It can't change skin that is in poor condition. Sun damage, poor eating habits or lack of hydration will show. When skin is dry it cries out for moisture. Start using sunscreen daily and a good moisturizer formulated to your skin type. When skin is oily, it causes breakouts, or looks greasy, especially in photos. I can only work with what you present me. So take time now to get your skin in optimum condition!
And for hair, be realistic. I receive requests from brides for hair styles that are not achievable. Brides show me images of models with hair 12 inches longer that theirs, and want it to look like the image. With extensions, yes! If you know your hair need coloring do it before you come to me. If you have not had a trim in 6 months, do it now.
If any of you are questioning your current skin condition or need advise on hair, please ask me. I have been doing this for over 25 years, and can certainly provide some answers.

Jamaica mon!

As you may have read, I have added destination wedding and honeymoon planning to my bag of tricks. A great benefit is I get to travel to these fabulous destinations to check them out for you. I just returned from Jamaica at the end of February. It's the third largest Caribbean island with a wide range of hotels, inns resorts, and guest houses ranging from standard to super luxurious.

The water is so blue, and the beach sand feel like icing sugar. The major hubs are Kingston, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril and the South Coast. Visitors can be married just 24 hours after arrival. The resorts range from the ever popular all inclusive Sandals resorts with a great selection of room categories and water sports.

All the way to a quaint exotic 17 room resort called The Caves. Here there is no beach, but rocky cliffs where you can dive into the bluest water and dine in caves - yes, caves!

There are no-stop flights from Vancouver during peak travel times with a 6 1/2 hour flight time.

The local people are fabulous, relaxing is the order of the day. Food is great, and the resorts certainly cater to weddings, honeymooners, and visiotrs in need of some fun and sun.

Makeup for Brides

What look should you consider for makeup? My best advise is to be true to who you are. If you are a minimalist with your daily makeup routine, you may not be comfortable with a full coverage foundation, or dramatic eye shadow. But if you do want more dramatic eyes, or dewy skin, you will have to apply a bit more that your routine application. You can look natural with foundations that are water based, and light in texture. Powder can be long wearing but light in texture to allow your skin to look dewy. Eye shadows can be earth tones, liner can light and smoky, and lashes can be individual clusters. If you do not wear lipstick, gloss is totally acceptable.

A key to the natural look, but with enough drama for the camera, is to blend colors and product well. Avoid anything with too much glitter, frost or shimmer. Bronzers provide a naturally sun kissed look.

On the flip side, if MAC is your favorite store, and you love all the newest shades of Viva Glam, and love long dramatic false lashes, then go for it on your wedding day. Be sure to choose water resistant or water proof products, ensure all is blended well with a equal mix of flat and shimmer products.

Wed in Mexico

I had the great opportunity of spending time in the Riviera Maya. The water is so turquoise! The weather was great, and the sand was white.

If you are a bride thinking of getting married on the beach, or in a wedding gazebo, you would never have any regrets. I spoke with a few brides just after their ceremonies, and they all said the same thing: getting married on the beach was fabulous! If you are thinking this would be a great option, there are a few things to consider. Know that it will be hot, so choose a gown that packs well and is steamlined in design, choose waterproof makeup, and consider an up do as there is always a bit of a breeze from the ocean.

Plan a beachfront private dinner or cocktail party. Or if your group is small, dine in one of the restaurants where food and drinks are included!

Every now and again, I will work with a bride who really touches my heart. Lindsay was one of those brides - a lovely person, a great soul and processes a love of life. She married her sweet heart, Larry this August of 2008. Her images were take by Chris + Lynn Photography, and you almost feel like you were there! It was a pleaure to create her wedding day look. I had to stop by Lindsay's the other day, and her bouquet is still in tact, and she is still talking about her fabulous day and wedding pictures...

This year's show October, 2008 was as always, informative and elegant with great displays of cakes, photographers, hats and veils, wedding jewelry and more. The chefs at the Brock House create the most wonderful appetizers, along with an assortment of wines. The fashion show included gowns from simple and elegant to the Princess bride. The show is produced by Dreamgroup and they truly outdid themselves this year! And what better venue than the heritage home on the beach, the Brock House.

Lengthy Locks - real, or not...?

You are a bride, planning your wedding. All is falling into place. Except your hair! It won't grow as fast as you'd like, or the hairstyle you absolutely love requires more length or volume than your hair.

So what do you do? It is true that backcombing, jels, and volumizers can add fullness. You can create the "illusion" of length. But maybe you'd like to take it one step more. Why not consider

extensions! And I am talking about the easy ones - the type you simple clip in. Natural hair extensions can be washed, and curled with a sizzling hot curling iron and integrated into your own hair with a few well placed snaps. The cost averages about $200 and comes in a pack of 7 separate extentions. With proper care, they can last forever, and can be used many times after the wedding.

A bride I worked with this August decided she wanted extensions. She is one of the true stunning beauties, but wanted more fullness and length in her bridal style.

The result - breathtaking. When I finished curling her hair, added the extensions, and integrated then together, we all stood back and said, "Wow"! If you would like more information, email me. 10 Tips for Wedding Day Makeup & Hair Preparation

Planning your wedding is a full time job. Much of that time is devoted to your bridal makeup and hairstyling. Following these tips could make the journey easier:
1. To avoid disappointment, book your stylist early. I receive confirmed bookings sometimes a year in advance! Brides will email me to request a date 3 to 6 months in advance and are so surprised to learn that date is booked!
2. Eliminate surprise - book a trial run to establish your look as well as develop a rapport with your stylist. And when I say trial, I mean a complete makeup application and hairstyle! I work with a
bride for 2 1/2 hours during a consultation to ensure she is happy.
3. Ensure your skin is in top condition. Makeup will enhance, but hydrated clear skin is the first step. Drink plenty of water, cut back on alcohol, use moisturizer and try to get plenty of rest (hard to do!).
4. If your teeth need a boost, try Crest White Strips or discuss bleaching with your dentist.
5. You can create drama with false lashes, but did you know you now can have lashes applied semi-permanently? This is a great option if your honeymoon includes swimming and sandy beaches.
6. Your hair should be in great shape with the ends trimmed, coloring or streaking done at least 7 to 10 days before the wedding. If dry, be sure to apply deep conditioners, or ask the salon for a silk wrap.
7. Be realistic with your chosen hair style. If your hair in long, silky, fine and does not hold a curl well, you may not be wise in requesting long spiral curls. They won't last through the ceremony! When you have a hair trial provide images so your stylist gets some idea of your true desire. But if your hair just hits the top of your shoulders, don't bother providing images of hair that is 10" longer than yours!
8. If you hair is not as long as you'd like, or it simply won't grow, consider hair extensions. There are so many choices in lengths, styles and colors, and so easy to snap in and work with. Matching with your own hair color is so doable that no one will know it's not yours!
9. Working with a stylist is a collaborative affair. This is a new experience for you, and you may feel unsure. A good makeup artist and hairstylist should ask many questions, listen to your ideas and offer some tips. But remember this is your day. Don't be afraid to speak up and say what you feel. If your stylist in not listening or says no to your ideas and comments, run!
10. Carry a small handbag with you on your wedding day! I am often at weddings where the bride is leaving to get into the limo, and is stashing lip gloss, or tissues, or extra bobby pins in her Dad's suit jacket, or bridesmaids purses. Or worse - a plastic bag from Safeway (yes, this really happened!)

Two hours of Bliss...

As women, we all know how important it is to pamper ourselves. Then why don't we do it more ofter? I try to place myself at the top of my "to do" list, but somehow life gets in the way.
So last week I decided, this is it, I am treating myself to a facial and body massage!
I looked on-line at my local spa and when I read this, I said sign me up!
"Relax and Renew, Includes a deep cleansing, gentle exfoliation, extractions, masque and moisturizer followed with a 30 minute Aromatic Body Massage."
Who doesn't want to be renewed? I arrived at 4 pm, was lead to a change room where I doned sandals and a big robe. I was ushered into a room, which immediately shifted my gears to relax mode. It was mysteriously dark, and the flickering candles lulled me into a romantic mood (why do candles do that?).
The skin specailsit asked me to lay face down on the bed, which was warm. I knew I was in heaven...
She began to massage my upper shoulders. I knew then I may have to be scraped off the floor. Conversation was quiet as was the music. She massaged my calf muscles. I rolled over on my back and she began gently massaging and steaming my face. Did she notice I was looking at her with adoring eyes? Then true happiness - she said my complexion was good! All these years of cleansing, masking, toning, moisturizing and suncreen has paid off -Yahoo!
Needless to say, at the end of the two hour session, (yes 2 hours!) I felt like a new woman. And when I got home, my husband said , "boy you look great without one speck of makeup!"
I've already booked my next appointment...

The fine "Art" of Weddings

Karen Lorena Parker is one of Vancouver's most gifted artists. I met her a few years ago when she used my makeup and hair services for her promotional images, and we have since become friends. She paints the most unbelievable pieces, and is represented by galleries all over North America. She recently has been working with Bides to create expressions of their romantic memories. She meets with the bride, hears her story and touching moments of their wedding day, looks at images, and then creates those memories and passion on canvas.

I had the great pleasure to work with Lindsay, and meet her charming husband Jason this past summer. It is no wonder her wedding is featured in this Winter/Spring 2008 issue of Wedluxe - she is breathtaking. I applied makeup on the bride as well as her mom, and 5 attendants. Lindsay wanted a "Red Carpet" Glam look with rich golds, bronzes, long lashes and pale glossy lips.

They make a great couple. I wish them a life of happiness and good fortune.

Plan a decadent Beverly Hills getaway...

I just got back from a 12 day vacation/ business trip to Palm Desert & Los Angeles. I must admit that I am somewhat intoxicated with all the Hollywood glam. I love shopping in Beverly Hills, enjoy lunch at the Ivy and cocktails at the Polo Lounge. If you want to treat yourself to a fabulous weekend with your hubby, or best gal pal, here's the lowdown..
Plan a 3 night stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel with all it's rich fabulous movie star history. Right now their rates are $335 US per night.
Have brunch at the pool. I recommend the eggs Benedict, best I have ever tasted and only $15. Enjoy lunch or drinks at the infamous Polo Lounge, where I was waiting in line beside none other than Avril Lavigne and her entourage. Shop till you drop in Beverly Hills on Rodeo and Robertson (even just to window shop).
Then really indulge with a hair cut. I was treated to one of the best hair cuts ever at the Ken Paves Salon - only $125. My stylist Larry, was funny, charming (and oh so handsome) and made me feel like a queen for 1 1/2 hours. He just returned from Chicago where he worked on Oprah's show "100 Makeover in 48 hours" (view video at Oprah, showing Larry working with Ken Paves team). As the blinds were being drawn, he whispered that it may get crazy for a while - Lindsay Lohan was due to arrive!

During consultations, brides will often ask if they need to wear a veil. Truthfully, there is no wrong or right answer. It's how comfortable you feel. Today there are all sorts of alternatives. Add freshwater pearls pins, or one white orchid tucked behind your ear, or a satin ribbon, or a spray of white feathers. Do what makes you feel fabulous! And if you aren't sure? Have a hair consultation, then go to the boutiques and try tiara's, pins, and headbands. Take photos and choose the one you absolutely love!

To Wash or not to Wash...

A question I am asked frequently regarding styling hair is "Should I wash my hair the night before?". For me, I would prefer it to be washed the morning of the wedding. I like to create soft, more carefree styles. Unwashed hair can sometimes be greasy, and can lay flat to the scalp. I like working with fresh hair that has bounce. And I know personally that if I didn't wash my hair daily, my scalp would feel so itchy! So in my opinion - wash away!
